Error ‘Application cannot be installed in the default install location’ when trying to install or update an application on an Android device

When I was allowing applications to be updated one particular app failed after downloading from Google Play.

I checked Settings and then Storage to calculate the amount of memory available for Device Memory. Turns out there was not enough free memory to install the failing application which was a larger sized application.

I uninstalled some apps I no longer use to free up the necessary space. Alternatively you could also go into each app and move it to the SD card from the Device Memory.
